Blue Gum Country Estate. Address 7 kms along the R326 from Stanford ARTS AND CRAFTS
Hermanus and Onrus are home to many painters, jewellers and potters. Galleries
worth visiting include the Onrus and Windsor Galleries but exploration of the
side streets in both towns will reveal many more studios.
BAR Blue Gum has a fully licensed bar in the main lounge. In accordance with the
conditions of our liquor licence, Blue Gum reserves the right to charge corkage
on all alcoholic beverages consumed in the lodge, but not purchased from our bar.
Beverages from the lodge bar may also be order to your room. Please consult the
attached wine list.
BEACHES The beaches in Hermanus are magnificent, Voelklip is ideal for families
and has terraced lawns for those who dislike sand. Sandbaai has rock pools for
exploring Grotto Beach is the longest beach in Hermanus and ideal for walking
Langbaai is a very secluded beach at the base of the cliffs Gansbaai boasts the
aptly named Pearly beach, reputed to have the softest and whitest sand of all
beaches in the area. Arniston has wonderful beaches and swimming areas if you
are travelling in that direction.
BIRDING Blue Gum boasts a diverse bird population of 107 recorded species. The
variety of habitats, from riverine, pasturage and mountain fynbos afford the estate
this diversity. The vineyards are well populated with small insect and plant eaters,
like shrikes and bulbuls. The pastures are home to ducks, geese and various raptors.
In front of the lodge, the little dam is a hive of activity with weaver birds
collecting grass to make their nests. The Klein Rivier lagoon is home to many
water bird species, from fish eagles to pelicans.
BOAT TRIPS Blue Gum has exclusive access to a boat on the Stanford River. We offer
morning and evening cruises. The trips are designed to be relaxing and informative.
As you glide down the river, our guide will share her knowledge of the area as
well as telling you about birds and animals that live along the shore line. The
Klein River lagoon is more commonly called the Hermanus lagoon is ideally suited
for sail boating. If you wish to sail, the Hermanus Boat club will rent you a
boat.
BOOKS AND GAMES We have a modest library in the bookcase in the lounge. There
are also various games, including chess, playing cards, backgammon, scrabble and
a bridge table. We encourage guests to join some of our excursions as they allow
guests to experience the Klein River Valley Sunset boat trip on the Stanford River
(2 hours). Our guide will identify a wide variety of birds and animals that inhabit
the shores and banks of the river before stopping to let you swim, enjoy a sundowner
and absorb the tranquil beauty of the area. Guided cliff walk at De Kelders(2
hours) to view whales and explore the Strandloper (beach walkers) caves. This
invigorating walk is ends with a glass of sparkling wine and oysters on the cliffs
overlooking Walker Bay. Mountain drive (2 hours) up the back of the neighbouring
farmers private mountain reserve. Our local guide will details many of the fascinating
natural features of the area before you reach the summit of the mountain for a
glass of wine and a cheese platter.
EXPLORING THE SURROUNDING COUNTRYSIDE The local wine farms include Erica. The
well-known Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson and Newton Johnson estates are
only 30 minutes away. The town of Stanford has some fascinating shops, hotels
and delis to visit and is well worth a morning or afternoon exploration. Gansbaai
and De Kelders offer some of the best whale watching in the world. It is not uncommon
to see several whales within 50 metres of the shoreline.
FLY-FISHING The dams in the area are stocked with rainbow trout, carp and bass,
all of which may be fished by arrangement. The Klein Rivier which runs through
the farm is populated with Small Mouth Bass and Blue Gill, both of which may be
fished at your leisure. FYNBOS Blue Gum Country Estate extends up the Klein Rivier
Mountain directly behind the lodge to the 135m contour line. We hope that you
will walk in the mountains and enjoy the diversity of flora. fynbos has one of
the highest species diversity of any floral kingdom in the world and a short walk
up the mountain will reveal a wide variety of plants.
GOLF Arabella Country Estate voted the best new course in South Africa in 1999,
the course was designed by Matkovich Hayes and is 6095 metres in length with a
rating of 72. Every golfer must have an official handicap and membership cards
must be presented on the day of play. The course is a soft spike one and the dress

HORSE RIDING If you would like to ride during your stay with us, we have exclusive
access to a nearby stable. Riding on the beaches or in the mountains is highly
rated. LUNCH We serve light lunches upon request, between 12:00 and 14:30. Please
see our lunch menu for suggestions. MOUNTAIN BIKES There is a selection of mountain
bikes, outside the main office. We suggest you cycle through the farm and surrounding
areas.
POOL There is a swimming pool in the gardens for your enjoyment, pool towels are
provided at the pool and on the loungers in the garden. ROOM SERVICE Blue Gum
offers a light room service menu, which is included in this folder, if you would
like to place an order please contact reception. Early morning tea or coffee can
be served in your room. Arrangements should be made each evening after dinner.
Beverages from the lodge bar may also be order to your room. Please consult the
attached wine list. STARS The evening sky at Blue Gum is wonderful, take time
after dinner to lie on the lawn or a pool lounger and view the night sky, a pair
of binoculars make an excellent telescope.
SUNSET Sunset is a magical time at Blue Gum guest house and we recommend that
you join us for a glass of wine on the veranda adjacent to the main lounge. The
views are spectacular.
SWIMMING There is a swimming pool in the gardens. Towels are provided at the swimming
pool and also on the pool loungers.
TEA If you would like afternoon tea and scones please place an order with one
of the staff in the main lounge or conservatory. Your room is stocked with a selection

THE FARM AND SURROUNDING AREAS Explore the farm at your leisure. It is quite safe
to walk around on your own, either into the vineyards, down to the river or up
the mountain. For a detailed description of all that the farm and immediate surroundings

TRANSFERS Road and helicopter transfers to Cape Town or other destinations in
the winelands can easily be arranged. Please ask us for further information about

VINEYARDS We are in the process of establishing Blue Gum as a wine farm and later
a wine estate. At present 3 hectares of Shiraz have been established, we intend
to plant an additional 6-8 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc which we hope will be available
for you to enjoy on future visits to our farm.
WALKING Blue Gum lodge has wonderful walks; in fact you may walk anywhere, anytime,
anyhow. When walking please be aware of animals and keep an eye out for snakes.
Alternatively we suggest a walk along the cliffs at De Kelders or along Grotto
Beach in Hermanus.
WHALES Walker Bay in Hermanus offers wonderful whale watching opportunities and
the parking lot next to the old Harbour is a favoured vantage point. Alternatively
a walk along the cliffs in Hermanus is both scenic and ideal for spotting whales
in the bay De Kelders in Gansbaai offers some of the best land-based whale watching
in the world. If you park your car at the cliffs and walk along the footpaths
you will be assured some of excellent places from which to view whales in the
bay.
WINE ESTATES There are 7 wines estates in the Hermanus area; the majority are
located in the Hemel en Aarde Valley as you enter the town from the Cape Town
side. Erica wine estate however is nearby, in the Klein Rivier Valley and definitely
worth visiting. There are also 2 specialist wine shops in Hermanus, Wine &
Company in town and Wine village at the entrance to the Hemel en Aarde Valley.
Both are worth visiting, offering excellent selections from local estates as well
as from other Cape wine regions. A Great Alternative
