I highly recommend Ronnie Goldberg’s screenwriters course. Like many people I
often stated that I should write a script for a film but like many of us I did
precious little to make that a reality. It appeared to me to be an effort of similar
proportions to penning a novel and several false starts showed that I had achieved
little more than a few chapters of hard won dislocation. Seeing great writers
and producers like David E Kelly and a host of others churning out scripts two
to a dozen, it seemed improbable that I would ever actually write a script. Referred
by a friend, Ronnie Goldberg showed me how to change that. After completing his
course, his “parallel construction” technique enabled me to build an outline for
my film in two days. Once I had a structure, the chapters of my story could be
matched and tailored. A series of “check buttons” built into the course remind
you of the main elements that must be satisfied and to confirm that your outline
and script has all the major elements required in a story. It confirms or disproves
if your plots have been thought out fully and whether your characters are rich
enough to be seen as real people and not just extras filling in space. Ronnie’s
creative tools, like the “lateral lookup” and “creative wheels”, provide checks,
insights, ideas and contradictions for inspiration to build your characters and
develop more robust scenes and it was fascinating to see how these professional
writers are able to do what they do. On top of this I thoroughly enjoyed my lessons
with Ronnie. Equipped with exceptional world, historical and cultural knowledge
he has an ability to review your work from another perspective. His insight in
itself requires you to be certain that you have developed your story fully and
in a manner in which viewers can understand what you are trying to convey. Whether
my script will ever be developed into a film, time will tell but I have written
it and that is half the battle won. The rest is down to you,
